The President's Terrorizing Visit To Kano

When president Jonathan visited Kano on Saturday to commission a flyover, a poorly constructed one for that matter, he brought untold and unnecessary hardship to the people. All link roads - and some with no connection with the venue of the commissioning - were blocked hours before his arrival, hundreds of police men and soldiers barricaded the roads, some lined the streets, fighter jets, and at least two helicopters, roamed the sky.

The closest anyone could get to the Gyadi-Gyadi flyover was at least 3km away, only the president's entourage and high ranking members of his party were allowed to come closer. A journey of 15mins took 3hours, or more, because one had to take longer routes in order to bypass the blockade.
Saturday was hellish for most residents in Kano, and, I wonder If anyone would want the president to visit again. I learnt he spent less than two hours in the city, yet, he kept the people in grueling discomfort for close to eight hours.

I wonder how Lagos survives these terrorizing visits of the president, and to think that he's almost relocated to Lagos - Lagosians must be going through a lot. If you moved through the city of Kano on Saturday, you would hardly blame governor Fashola for putting the success of the Lagos robbery on the president's doorstep.

There're over five thousand inhabitants in my community, but not a single police post. Yet, hundreds of armed men, fighter jets, and helicopters were deployed to secure one man, the one man whose job it is to protect me. Very ironic.

The funny thing about all this is that the governor of the state merry-go-rounds the city without discomforting anyone. His security is probably the lightest among the governors. This is in spite of the series of attacks on the city by terrorists.
I just hope the president won't visit anytime soon - we are yet to be free from the daze of the last one.
