The frustrations of an NYSC official – By Israel Mark Ademola

Nigeria is a country that boosts of a large quantity of very frustrated people. I’m a member of this association and so are you. But why are we frustrated? Let’s look at it this way: You wake up in morning, wanted to take your bath but the tap is not running. You managed to get water from a nearby well, good for you. You remembered you need to press your clothes but alas! There’s no light. In fact, you’ve not seen your bulb lit for some days, yet you pay your bills. It’s only fair you get the service you paid for, but of course that word ‘fair’ does not exist. We deleted it from our national dictionary.

Your boss is yet to pay you your last month salary, this month has come to end, no show yet. keep hoping. But unfortunately, he got tired of your face and welcomed you with a sack letter on a Monday morning. Whoops! That’s really bad. Now, you have nothing! Just a sack letter in a brown envelope. You were sacked for no justifiable reason, other than the ugliness of your face, you were also refused your earned wages. You are powerless, no one to fight for you.
Then, you get home, hoping to pounce on the leftover fufu, but the ewedu soup is cold. You used the last kerosene last night. Oh, thank God! NEPA just ‘released’ the light. You’ll use the electric stove. Just when you were about placing your pot on it, the overloaded transformer gave a huge sound, then the light went off. To make matters worse, your neighbor switches on his Gen, the noise is deafening. You can’t eat, you can’t sleep.

The truth is, our environment is designed to make us miserable and frustrated. But we must keep our sanity, we must not wash our frustrations on others.
But, my senior NYSC official from Abuja is unaware of this need to keep our sanity even when we have every right and reason to go mad. Her university degree couldn’t stop her from going berserk. Have i told you why she lost it? Really sorry, Please pardon my insolence. That’s what I’m talking about, I’m frustrated too.

This woman was sent from Abuja, so I heard, to monitor the monthly clearance in Uyo, Akwaibom state. She came with a determination to effect change, just like Mr president, she believes we deserve fresh air. Our ‘disorderliness’ is something she couldn’t tolerate.
Change is a difficult thing. Nigerians hate the smell of it, this NYSC official was aware of this peculiar characteristic. So, she came along with her son’s belt. Corps members are just like her children at home, since she uses belt on her kids, she planned to give us a dose of it.
When a system is disorderly, rowdy but effective, yes effective. Am i losing it too?  For God’s sakes, how can a disorderly process be effective? Ok, this is it, the procedure is a mess, but corps members still do their clearance in record time without having to queue up in the sun for hours. You do not replace such a procedure with a seemingly orderly but time wasting one. Who love to queue up in the sun for hours?

At first she succeeded, but I  knew It’s only a matter of hours before things get out of hand. The process is slow, very slow and the weather was harsh. So, as expected, frustrated corps members became disorderly. She had no other options but to use her son’s belt. Yes, she flogged corps members. Not just that, she poured water on them. One corps member even sustained a head injury. Then she left. Mission accomplished.

But, the only thing she accomplished apart from washing her frustrations on us was replacing disorderliness with chaos. A two days clearance has entered the third day.
The corps members who were initially scared to react, later lost it too. They protested, Sorry ‘corpers’ don’t protest, they actually demanded that she stayed clear of the venue.

Just to let you know…..
The zonal inspector has apologized to all corps members. Apology accepted!
